NASA,SGI和Intel打造全球最快计算机
SGI，NASA和Intel要建造世界最快的计算机，代号为哥伦比亚(clumbia)。它的速度大概是42.7万亿HZ，而之前日本的地球模拟器的计算速度大概是35.86万亿HZ，IBM的新深蓝大概是36.01万亿HZ。组成哥伦比亚的是20台SGI Altix systems，每台包含512片 Intel Itanium 2 处理器，完成后的哥伦比亚还包含了440T的数据存储空间，它将用来提升NASA的科研发现速度。更让人吃惊的是，哥伦比亚组装只用了不到120天，每台机器都运行单独运行Linux系统。怎么样，想不想自己装一台20个节点的超级计算机玩玩？

Its performance test (LINPACK) result of 42.7 teraflops easily outclasses the previous mark set by Japan's Earth Simulator of 35.86 teraflops AND that set by IBM's new BlueGene/L experiment of 36.01 teraflops. What's even more awesome is that each of the 20 512-processor systems run a single Linux image, AND Columbia was installed in only 15 weeks. Imagine having your own 20-machine cluster?"
